The Alchemist of Baghdad works by candlelight in a medieval Islamic laboratory that contains instruments that will not be invented again in Europe for another three centuries — alchemical flasks bubbling with experiments, ancient manuscripts written in Arabic and Greek and Syriac, an astrolabe, a celestial sphere, a set of surgical tools that would not look out of place in a modern operating room.
